The Sunset Limited is an evening excursion train guaranteed to delight sophisticated senses and provide an intimate Grand Canyon experience. Each adult-only train transports approximately 190 people, and the train car setup makes it easy to mingle and converse with one another. Passengers travel to the canyon in first class train cars featuring a stunning array of hors d’oeuvres, crudités and gourmet cheese and cracker board.
The train’s gathering place is the Max Biegert car - this car features a hardwood dance floor, expansive full-service bar and music. A highlight of every journey is the jazz musicians, who fill each train car with soothing melodies reminiscent of another time. Once at the Grand Canyon, passengers enjoy a guided tour to several intimate lookout points offering spectacular canyon views. Passengers revel in the magnificence of the changing landscape as the sun sets through the canyon’s walls, constantly changing the colors of the plateaus and mesas with shifting shadows and light.
Passengers board the train for the return trip as the moon rises and the first stars appear in the night sky. Throughout the return trip, passengers can visit the open-air platform at the rear of the train on the luxurious Max Biegert car. There, they are able to enjoy miles of open starry sky and cool mountain air, all while being soothed by the melodic clickety-clack of the train track. Or, passengers can step inside to enjoy the live music and festive atmosphere. It’s one of the rarest travel opportunities available today, reminiscent of a by-gone era when rail travel was the epitome of elegance.
Gourmet Fare
The outbound journey features hors d'oeuvres including a crudités arrangement of fresh seasonal micro greens, vegetables, fresh fruits and berries, with several uniquely flavored dipping sauces. A palate-cleansing cheese and cracker board features fine international and domestic cheeses selected for their unique flavor profiles. These cheeses have been chosen to pair with The Sunset Limited’s unique wine selections. During the return journey, passengers can fill their plates with hot dinner selections, including beef tenderloin kabobs with rich demi-glace, Asian chicken skewers in a tangy orange Mongolian sauce and jumbo shrimp in a sumptuous bacon flavored scampi sauce. Unique choices of canapés and desserts are also available, including mini-cheesecakes, chocolate-dipped strawberries, cream filled éclairs and assorted petite fours.
Attire
While the train is an elegant excursion, passengers are encouraged to dress comfortably. Jackets are highly recommended as the fall northern Arizona evenings can become quite cool. In addition, comfortable and sturdy walking shoes will make exploring the Grand Canyon more enjoyable.
